High Key Lighting

Dacia Maria is a vibrant model who looks good in color or in black and white. As a photographer there are many times where we choose to create a certain look with lighting and in this instance a high key black and white concept was initiated. So how is this style created? In this instance we chose an all white look. White lingerie, white curtains and even white high heels. The lighting was simple and consisted of a large octagon soft box to create the pop of lighting. By placing the lighting directly in front of the subject and the photographer standing underneath it, the area had full soft illumination creating the high key effect when transferred to black and white. You must keep in mind that the makeup will be washed out if the artist doesn't use strong enough colors and contouring. Be sure to tell your makeup artist what the intent of the shot is so that they properly utilize their skill to compliment your lighting. It's equally important for the model to know as well so that they can choose poses that compliment their form.
